Making a will is an important step, but it is not a one-off task. Changes in your family or your finances can mean that your will no longer does what you intended.

Events that call for a review

  • Marriage, separation or divorce, which can affect an existing will.
  • The birth or adoption of a child or grandchild.
  • Buying or selling a business or significant property.
  • The death or incapacity of an executor or beneficiary.
  • Moving to another country.

Beyond the will

A review is also a good time to check your powers of attorney and any directions about health care, so that the people you trust can act for you if needed.

How often

Even without a major event, reviewing your estate plan every few years helps to keep it aligned with your circumstances and with any changes in the law.
